A survey involving more than 2,000 drivers revealed what your car care habits can say about your personality.
According to the study, two out of five drivers enforce strict rules for their passengers, including no smoking, no littering, and no feet on the dashboard.
Meanwhile, one-third of drivers treat their cars “like a baby,” not allowing passengers in with dirty clothes or shoes or letting them slam the doors.
Some drivers even ban fast food in their cars, while others prohibit any type of food. There are also those who don’t allow passengers to open drinks—especially sodas—while the car is moving.
The research was commissioned by Turtle Wax as part of the “You Are Like Your Car” campaign, which aims to emphasize how the way you treat your vehicle reflects how you present yourself to the world.
“For many people, a car is much more than just a way to get from point A to point B – it’s a passion, a project, and a source of pride,” explained Matthew Chapman, global portfolio director at the car care company.
“It’s also about impression management. A spotless car says something about how we live and what we want others to think of us. It speaks to efficiency, organization, enjoyment, and self-respect,” added behavioral psychologist Jo Hemmings.
Check out the main personality traits of car owners based on how they care for their vehicles, according to Hemmings’ analysis:
1. Spotless interior: need for control and calm
If your car’s interior is completely spotless, not a thing out of place, no crumbs on the floor, and no mess, Hemmings says this means you like to be in control.
She adds that this person has a strong need for organization and mental clarity, using a clean environment to cope with external stressors. It may also indicate strong pride in personal standards.
2. Strict passenger rules: assertiveness and strong boundaries
If you ask people to wipe their feet before entering, forbid food in the vehicle, and dislike when people slam your doors, you’re an assertive person with great self-awareness who values personal space. This car care habit often extends to your home as well.
3. Messy car interior: creative and free spirit
If you don’t really care about tidiness and don’t mind your car being messy, it may indicate that you prioritize spontaneity and creativity. This person values experiences more than aesthetics and favors connections over appearances.
4. Clean and shiny exterior: strong social awareness
If your car is always clean and polished, with windows so shiny you can see your reflection, it means you’re conscious of how others perceive you. You value first impressions – and all the ones after – and see your car as an extension of your personality.
5. No rules: laid-back but slightly careless person
If your passengers can eat, drink, play loud music, and come in with muddy shoes, you probably prioritize comfort and connection over control. You might be very open and flexible, but your laid-back approach could result in carelessness.
